How Do I Brush and Floss? And Why?
There are many reasons to brush and floss your teeth on a daily basis. One of the many is to control
bad breath(Halitosis). We have all come in contact with someone who's breath is, well, atrocious.
It is like an invisible barrier to get closer to the offender. It even creates a negative image of the
person. If you are in sales, don't be surprised if your clients start going to other sellers, simply
based on your bad breath and the negative image it gave the interested party.
Unfortunately, like body odor, some is worst than others. We just have to try a little harder to
control it. Another reason to brush and floss on a daily basis is to control the amount of bacteria
we have in our mouth. It has been clinically proven that gum disease is directly linked to other
diseases, such as, cardiovascular disease, stroke, increased diabetes, an even premature births.
So, if bad breath is not enough of a reason the other diseases should be.
How do we brush our teeth?
There are many ways to do it. There is no one correct way. But, most Dentists usually agree with
brushing for 1 to 2 minutes, using a soft tooth brush and using a fluoridated toothpaste. There
are many parties out there that are fighting fluoridating the water supply. I will tell you right
now that removing fluoride from the water will increase cavities!!! The incidence of true allergies to
fluoride is extremely low.
My preferred method of brushing is as follows:
Angle your tooth brush at about a 45 degree angle with some of the bristles hitting the junction
between your teeth and the gum tissue. This will sweep the plaque build up that is normally left
behind after brushing. Try to brush only 2 to 3 teeth at a time and work your way around.

When you get to the front teeth, brush your teeth in a vertical motion, sweeping the junction
between teeth. This will effectively clean the most overlooked area.

Flossing is a very important thing to do also. When you brush your teeth you really only clean
about 70 percent of the surfaces of the teeth. The brush bristles can not get in between the teeth.
Hence, flossing is needed to get the plaque we miss with brushing. I personally love the new flossers,
Crest Glide Floss Picks. They are quick and easy to use. Even children can use them effectively.
Just slide the floss string up and down between the tooth contacts.
DO NOT SAW FROM SIDE TO SIDE!
You only need to floss once a day and the best time is at night right before bedtime. When we sleep our
saliva production decreases and the recalcification properties of saliva are reduced. So the cleanest
time to have our teeth is at night.
